Pumpkin Moonshine
In honor of Halloween tomorrow, I wanted to share a couple of seasonally-appropriate books for this time of year. Today I'll be talking about Pumpkin Moonshine , a slim little picture book courtesy of Tasha Tudor. First published in 1938, but taking place about a hundred years earlier, it tells the story of Sylvie Ann and her efforts to make a pumpkin moonshine (i.e., jack-o-lantern). There's really not much to the story--the most exciting event is the pumpkin rolling down a hill and knocking over a bucket. It's the illustrations that do all of the work, showing a small sliver of life on an early 19th century farm, and bathing everything in the warm, golden light of autumn. Tudor, of course, is primarily known for her illustrations, and is responsible for dozens of children's books.
